Fidel Castro openly supported his brother Raúl, the temporary president,
for the first time since stepping aside because of health problems in July 2006.
In a written message to the national assembly read out on 28 December, he said
he had read Raúl's closing speech in advance and fully backed it. While Fidel
has penned numerous "reflections" on domestic and international issues
over the last 18 months he had refrained from alluding to Raúl. Fidel also
reiterated his comments from a week earlier that he had no desire "to cling
to office, still less to obstruct the rise of much younger people". All
